Understanding which hotels belong to which loyalty program isn't just trivia. It's the key to earning points faster, achieving elite status more efficiently and unlocking free nights at properties you'd otherwise never afford. Here's what you need to know about the five major hotel loyalty ecosystems, plus tips for getting the most out of each.

Why this matters for your wallet

Before diving in, there are a few principles that apply across all programs.
Loyalty programs reward consolidation: Splitting stays across multiple programs means slower progress toward elite status and fewer points per stay. Pick one or two programs that match where you actually travel and go deep.
Credit cards are the fastest path to elite status: The major hotel programs offer co-branded credit cards with automatic elite status as a benefit.
Free night certificates are often the single best value. Many hotel co-branded cards include annual free night certificates worth far more than the card's annual fee. In many cases, a card's annual fee pays for itself in one stay.
Points aren't equal across programs. A Hyatt point is worth roughly 1.8 cents, while a Hilton point is worth about 0.4 cent. Even if they are easier to earn, chasing points at a weaker program may not be worth it.

As one of the largest networks in the world, Hilton has something at nearly every price point, from Hampton Inn (known for its free hot breakfast) to Waldorf Astoria (the name behind some of the most coveted luxury properties in travel rewards).

Notable Hilton brands

Portfolios change somewhat frequently, but here are some of Hilton's most notable brands:

Luxury Hilton brands

  • Waldorf Astoria Hotels & Resorts: Iconic luxury properties.
  • Conrad Hotels & Resorts: Upscale urban and resort properties worldwide.
  • LXR Hotels & Resorts: A small collection of independent luxury properties, each reflecting its local culture.

Lifestyle & boutique Hilton brands

  • Canopy by Hilton: Neighborhood-inspired boutique hotels with local food and drink.
  • Curio Collection by Hilton: Independent upscale hotels with distinct character.
  • Tapestry Collection by Hilton: Eclectic boutique properties with local personality.
  • Graduate by Hilton: Hotels in college towns themed around campus culture.

Full-service Hilton brands

  • DoubleTree by Hilton: Famous for its warm chocolate chip cookie at check-in.
  • Hilton Garden Inn: Laid-back full-service with an on-site bar and restaurant.

Select-service Hilton brands

  • Hampton by Hilton: Free hot breakfast at every property, including Hampton's famous waffles.
  • Tru by Hilton: Modern, affordable and younger-skewing.

Extended stay

  • Homewood Suites by Hilton: Apartment-style suites with full kitchens and weekly social hours.
  • Embassy Suites by Hilton: All-suite rooms with complimentary cooked breakfast and evening happy hour open to all guests.
Relatively new additions: Select by Hilton is a new program connecting independent hotel brands to the Hilton network. The first brand to join is Yotel, a tech-forward urban hotel brand with properties in cities including Boston, San Francisco, Tokyo and Singapore. More independent brands are expected to follow.

NerdWallet's take on Hilton points: At 0.4 cent each, Hilton points are among the weakest major hotel currencies, meaning you'll need a lot of them for a meaningful redemption.
The program's real value for Hilton Honors members is in Hilton's elite status perks. Gold status delivers free breakfast or dining credits and room upgrades. Hilton's Fifth Night Free benefit (any elite member gets the fifth night free on points bookings) is also valuable on longer stays.

NerdWallet's take on the value of IHG points: At roughly 0.6 cent per point, IHG points are on the weaker end. The best-value redemptions tend to be at InterContinental properties in major business cities where cash rates are high.

NerdWallet's take on Hyatt points: At roughly 1.8 cents per point, Hyatt points are the most valuable of any major hotel currency.

Wyndham Rewards

Wyndham Rewards runs about two dozen brands across 9,000+ properties, making it one of the largest programs by property count.
Its strength is at the economy and midscale end. Wyndham dominates roadside, highway and budget-tier properties in the U.S. more than any other program. If you travel frequently on a budget or drive to your destinations, Wyndham is often the easiest program to extract consistent value from.

Notable Wyndham brands

Portfolios change somewhat frequently, but here are some of Wyndham's most notable brands:

Upscale Wyndham brands

  • Wyndham Grand: Design-forward upscale properties, often as large-scale with convention facilities.
  • Dolce Hotels & Resorts by Wyndham: Upscale properties focused on meetings, events and retreats.

Full-service & lifestyle Wyndham brands

How to choose the right hotel loyalty program

You travel frequently for business to major cities: You're generally best off with World of Hyatt or Marriott Bonvoy. Hyatt's points are worth more, though Marriott's network is much larger.
You want the easiest path to useful elite status via credit card: Consider Hilton or Hyatt.
You travel internationally and want maximum flexibility: Marriott Bonvoy, for its footprint across every destination type.
You primarily travel domestically on a budget: Wyndham Rewards, as it's the easiest program to extract value from without staying at expensive properties.
Pick one primary program, apply for the co-branded credit card and stay consistent. The math compounds quickly when you're earning hotel points on everyday spending, not just hotel nights.
