Is the Hilton Honors Card worth its annual fee?

Many or all of the products featured here are from our partners who compensate us. This may influence which products we write about and where and how the product appears on a page. However, this does not influence our evaluations. Our opinions are our own.

Hilton offers multiple co-branded credit cards issued by American Express. The Hilton Honors American Express Aspire Card and Hilton Honors American Express Surpass® Card attract the most attention because they offer notable luxurious benefits. But they also have annual fees. Hilton Honors American Express Card, with a $0 annual fee, can be a great alternative.

But is the Hilton Honors American Express Card worth it? Here’s a closer look.

What are Hilton points worth?

Hilton doesn’t offer an award chart for their redemptions. The award pricing changes based on multiple factors, including the price of the room. According to NerdWallet valuation, Hilton Honors points are worth about 0.4 cent each. That is the average value, so you might be able to beat that sometimes.

Generous welcome offer

Earn 80,000 Hilton Honors Bonus Points with the Hilton Honors American Express Card after you use your new Card to make $1,000 in eligible purchases within the first 3 months of Card Membership. Terms Apply.

This welcome offer is worth at least $375. This is very generous, considering this credit card has no annual fee.

For example, you could book a night at the Hilton Garden Inn in New York City for New Year’s Eve and the cost is 70,000 points for the night. The cash price for this hotel room would be almost $900.

This would be an amazing use for your Hilton points and far exceeds the $375 estimated value from the welcome offer.

Solid reward rate

The Hilton Honors American Express Card earns 7x Hilton Honors points per dollar at Hilton properties, 5x Hilton points at U.S. supermarkets, U.S. restaurants and U.S. gas stations and 3x Hilton points on all other purchases. Terms apply.

The rewards earnings equate to a 3.5% return at Hilton properties and resorts, 2.5% return at supermarkets, restaurants and gas stations and 1.5% on all other purchases. These reward rates can make earning Hilton points extremely easy.

No foreign transaction fees

The Hilton Honors American Express Card has no foreign transaction fees. This is a great benefit for a card with no annual fee. Terms apply.

It’s not often you find a no-annual-fee credit card with benefits worth mentioning. But the Hilton Honors American Express Card offers all the above benefits and then some.

For example, the card comes with automatic Hilton Silver status. Benefits of Hilton Silver status include:

  • 20% bonus points on paid stays.

  • Fifth night free on reward stays.

  • Two free bottles of water.

  • No resort fees on reward stays.

  • Access to exclusive Hilton Honors Experiences.

  • Discounted rate on hotel stays.

Terms apply.

The fifth night free on reward stays is a benefit that means you get more value for your points.

Spend your way to higher status

If you spend $20,000 on your Hilton Honors American Express Card in a calendar year, you will be upgraded to Hilton Gold status through the end of the next calendar year.

Hilton Gold status includes all the Hilton Silver status benefits plus:

  • 80% bonus points on paid stays.

  • Room upgrades (when available).

  • Free continental breakfast.

Terms apply.

Is the no-annual-fee version right for you?

The Hilton Honors American Express Card offers a valuable welcome offer, decent benefits and solid rewards. That is pretty amazing for a credit card with no annual fee for the casual Hilton traveler.

If you are someone who stays at Hilton properties more frequently, or would prefer higher status benefits, then we would recommend taking a closer look at the Hilton Honors American Express Surpass® Card or Hilton Honors American Express Aspire Card.
