For avid golfers, getting some tee time is a must-do vacation activity and sometimes even a destination driver. Now, golfers can make this sport part of the way they earn almost-free award travel.

Choice Hotels’ loyalty program has introduced a new program called Golf By Choice, which lets Choice Privileges members earn points for booking tee times through the Choice Privileges Golf site. Here’s what you need to know about the program’s benefits.

Earn points at golf courses

You’ll have to sign in to the Golf by Choice website to begin earning points by booking times at one of the 30,000 participating golf courses around the U.S. You’ll earn 4 Choice Privileges points for every dollar you spend on the reservation. That’s less than the 10 points you’ll earn per dollar for staying at a Choice hotel, but more than the 2 points per dollar that Choice Privileges® Visa Signature® Card earns on purchases outside of Choice Hotels.

Earn points with virtual training

There’s also an opportunity to earn 1,000 points when you sign up for Tathata Golf, an online training program. The membership costs $25 monthly, or you can pay $200 for an annual membership.

Redeem points for tee times

Not only can you earn points by golfing, but you can also redeem those Choice Privileges points for golfing times. All you have to do is toggle the search results in Golf by Choice to pay with points rather than money. On a search for golf courses in Los Angeles, a tee time that costs about $25 would have cost 8,323 Choice Privileges points.

Get discounts on golf gear

The Golf by Choice program includes some great benefits for purchasing golf gear as well. You can earn points on purchases, redeem points for gear and get discounts on popular brands like Nike and Adidas.

Elite status increases earnings

Just as elite status boosts your point earnings with Choice Hotel stays, premier members of Choice Privileges earn even more points for the same golfing activities. Gold members earn 10% more points through Golf by Choice. Platinum members get a 15% bonus, while Diamond members earn a nice 20% bonus.

The bottom line

Golfers have even more ways to earn and redeem their Choice Privileges points. Other loyalty programs like Hilton Honors offer similar benefits, like the ability to redeem points for golf experiences at their hotels.

While this won’t be a lucrative way to accumulate a huge chunk of points, with relatively cheap redemptions, it might be a good way to add tee time to your vacation — especially with any leftover points that you won’t use for a Choice Hotels stay.
