Best Old Navy Black Friday Deals from 2012

Old Navy’s reputation for offering affordable staples throughout the year makes it a prime destination for Black Friday shopping. The popular retailer’s winter accessories and layer-able clothing items are some of the easiest seasonal gift options, so when impressive deals go into effect, shoppers can knock out a good chunk of their holiday shopping here. But that doesn’t mean you should camp out in front of you nearest location just yet – ads for the chain’s previous Black Friday sales have been hit-or-miss.

Shoppers looking for discounts on a sprawling apparel selection may have been underwhelmed – or downright perplexed – by Old Navy’s 2012 Black Friday ad. A meager nine deals were offered in total between midnight and noon, a startling drop from 43 items in 2011, and seven of those sales were only available for four hours at a time. On the bright side, savings ranging from $8 (fleece half-zips) to $26 (adult coats) made for pretty excellent savings on popular items. $8 Jingle Jammies and $5 Famous Graphic Tees were the only all-day door busters advertised – good deals overall, but hardly worth a special trip.

Despite the ad’s assurance of “everything on sale”, the choice to limit their promotion to nine advertised discounts was odd, to say the least. Luckily, Old Navy redeemed itself at least partly with some exciting alternative promotions. Shoppers who made purchases of $40 or more received a free copy of Super Mario Brothers for Wii U and all visitors to the store received a card that gave them a chance to win one of 1,000 Wii U game systems. The promotion was the result of a much-publicized collaboration between Nintendo and Old Navy, further illustrated by the installation of demo stations in many locations where consumers could take a break from browsing to try out the recently released Wii U console.

Did shoppers respond to last year’s Wii-centric promotions and sparse clothing deals? The chain ultimately missed its projected sales, indicating that its targeted demographic was less than impressed with its Nintendo-related incentives. If they do intend to stick with the video game strategy, Old Navy had better sweeten the deal – or else stick to what they do best: cheap seasonal basics.
