A honeymoon to Maui doesn’t have to be expensive. Plan in advance, apply for the right credit cards, and complete the spending requirements by charging your wedding expenses to these cards.
With the right strategy, you can cover the cost of airfare, hotels, incidentals, and even activities with credit card points. Here’s how you can book an almost free honeymoon to Maui using points and miles.
Airfare used to be a huge expense when traveling to Maui, but fares have dropped thanks to the added competition of Southwest entering the market. Below are some of the cheapest ways to get to Hawaii using miles.
Southwest Airlines offers some pretty great fare sales to Maui, and since their redemption rates are based on the cost of airfare, it can be a terrific option. The airline flies nonstop from several cities in California, most recently launching nonstops from San Diego.
The best way to save on airfare with Southwest is to utilize their Low Fare Calendar. Using this tool, we were able to find round-trip Wanna Get Away fares between Los Angeles and Maui for as low as 22,614 points per person.
Using points from the Southwest Rapid Rewards® Performance Business Credit Card, you can easily cover round-trip airfare for two people to Maui on this route. Southwest is also a transfer partner of Chase Ultimate Rewards®. Below are the credit cards you can use to amass Southwest Rapid Rewards points:
- Southwest Rapid Rewards® Plus Credit Card.
- Southwest Rapid Rewards® Premier Credit Card.
- Southwest Rapid Rewards® Priority Credit Card.
- Southwest Rapid Rewards® Premier Business Credit Card.
- Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card.
- Chase Sapphire Reserve®.
- Ink Business Preferred℠ Credit Card.
15,000 Turkish miles round-trip on United
Turkish Airlines has some amazing sweet spot redemptions, including 15,000 miles round-trip for domestic awards in economy. That includes flights to Hawaii on Turkish Airlines partner United. You really can’t beat this, especially if you’re looking to redeem miles for a honeymoon to Maui during the summer. Airfare tends to be higher then, and you’re getting a solid deal at 15,000 miles round-trip per person.
You can earn Turkish Airlines Miles & Smiles by transferring points from the Citi ThankYou program. Below are some credit cards that earn Citi ThankYou points:
If you’re looking to book an almost-free honeymoon to Maui, the best way to rack up the most free nights is through World of Hyatt. Hyatt has two resorts in Maui: The Hyatt Regency Maui goes for 25,000 points per night, while the Andaz Wailea goes for 30,000 per night.
While the welcome bonus from The World Of Hyatt Credit Card will cover at most two free nights, you can also transfer Ultimate Rewards® points to Hyatt to extend your stay. Currently, the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card is offering enough bonus points to cover two additional free nights at either Hyatt property in Maui: Earn 60,000 bonus points after you spend $4,000 on purchases in the first 3 months from account opening. That's $750 toward travel when you redeem through Chase Ultimate Rewards®.
The welcome bonus from the Ink Business Preferred℠ Credit Card could cover up to three nights at the Hyatt Regency Maui: Earn 80,000 bonus points after you spend $5,000 on purchases in the first 3 months from account opening. That's $1,000 toward travel when you redeem through Chase Ultimate Rewards®.
Ground transportation between the airport and resort can get quite expensive in Maui, even if there are just two of you. Whether you opt for a shuttle or rental car, you should consider paying for this cost with a card like the Chase Sapphire Reserve®. Cardholders who redeem their points through the Ultimate Rewards® travel portal get 50% more value out of their points. For example, a $300 rental car booking will cost you just 20,000 points.
Opting for a shuttle instead? You can book a round-trip airport transfer for two adults for just 8,814 Ultimate Rewards® points total. If you have a Chase Sapphire Reserve®, that rate will be even lower since points are worth 50% more (as opposed to 25% more with the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card I searched with).
Everything in Maui is going to be expensive, including eating at your hotel. If you’re staying at a Hilton hotel, you can get free breakfast and lounge access (when available) by picking up the Hilton Honors Aspire Card from American Express. The card comes with instant Hilton Diamond status, which gets you the above mentioned perks. Cardholders also qualify for an annual $250 resort credit, so you can enjoy the spa or a fancy dinner without paying through the roof for it.
If you’re staying at a Hyatt hotel as recommended, you can still cover the cost of dining by using points as a statement credit. Another recommendation is to get the Chase Freedom®: Earn a $150 Bonus after you spend $500 on purchases in your first 3 months from account opening.
The welcome bonus is nothing to write home about, but the rotating 5% category bonuses every quarter can really help you save up lots of cash over the course of a year. You can then use those rewards to cover incidental costs on your Maui honeymoon.
Flexible rewards credit cards like the Chase Sapphire Reserve® and Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card really come in handy. That’s because you can redeem your points for a statement credit at 1 cent per point. While we wouldn’t recommend that for people who want to get the most value out of their points, some travelers just want to save money, in which case: Do what works for you.
When it comes to booking activities, the Chase Ultimate Rewards® portal can be a great place to put your points to use. Activities like snorkeling tours can be expensive in Maui. While you can get a Shaka Gold Card for big discounts on activities, you might also get value out of your Ultimate Rewards® points. For example, we did a search using a Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card account and found some great deals on snorkeling tours, portrait sessions and even the famous glass bottom boat reef exploration tour:
These are great options if you’d rather redeem 5,600 points for a snorkeling tour than pay $70. If you have a Chase Sapphire Reserve®, these rates will be even lower for you.
