MORE LIKE THISTravel

While tequila may not be the first drink that New York City brings to mind, there is no shortage of the magic Mexican elixir in the Big Apple. Whether you prefer it on the rocks, in margaritas or straight up, here are some great tequila spots in New York City.

Mayahuel

With the goal of getting patrons to embrace traditional Mexican fare alongside the world's finest tequila, Mayahuel offers smooth, quality spirits. The cocktail menu is diverse and refined with drinks like the Auggie March (Resposado Tequila, Antica Vermouth and Cynar) and the Sin Nombre Punch (raspberry tequila, lime, pineapple and cava).

La Biblioteca (de Tequila)

With a name that translates to "the Library," this subterranean liquor vault boasts an impressive 400-bottle collection of artisanal tequilas, mezcals and sotols. Something of a speakeasy, La Biblioteca (de Tequila) stocks Mexico's finest products from famous haciendas and small, family-owned distilleries in regions like Oaxaca and Durango. The extensive tequila list is complemented by a carefully crafted "tasting flights" menu that arranges smart sampling combinations.

Gabriela's Mexican Restaurant and Tequila Bar

Gabriela's Mexican Restaurant and Tequila Bar has an extensive tome of authentic Mexican cuisine prepared with fresh, raw ingredients. Dinner can be as simple as a cheese quesadilla or as rich as camerones en chipotle (jumbo shrimp, mussels, garlic, mushrooms, pineapple and cilantro in chipotle sauce). And the drink menu consists of a number of quality tequilas and margaritas.

Barrio Chino

Barrio Chino is a highly rated Mexican restaurant with great food and incredible margaritas. As hidden as it is trendy, the entrance is not clearly marked and easy to overlook. Once you've walked up and down Broome Street several times, you'll eventually figure it out (good luck). The establishment itself is a bit small and usually crowded. Barrio does not accept reservations, so expect a wait. But once you're seated, no rush. The food is cheap, and the drinks are delectable. Guests may choose from a variety of tequilas and margaritas made from fresh-squeezed juice.

Agave

Agave specializes in southwestern cuisine and alcohol. Decorated with adobe walls and spruce-fir imported from New Mexico, Agave transports guests to the opposite corner of the country and treats them to a distinctly southwestern experience. Food includes appetizers like chili and grilled corn on the cob, and entrees range from steak to pescado tacos. More importantly, the restaurant is equipped with over a hundred varieties of tequila and a diverse array of ingenious cocktails.
