Best Business Gas Credit Cards of August 2021

Many or all of the products featured here are from our partners who compensate us. This may influence which products we write about and where and how the product appears on a page. However, this does not influence our evaluations. Our opinions are our own. Here is a list of our partners and here's how we make money.

Business gas credit cards let you cash in at the pump. If your small business is constantly on the road, opting for a business credit card with a strong rewards rate for gas station spending — at least 3% cash back — may make sense.

Consider all of your purchases. Small-business credit cards offer generous benefits for many business expenses, not just gas. Pick a card that will maximize your total rewards. That may be one that offers 2% cash back on fuel, but 5% on office supplies.

Factor in flexibility. Some business fuel credit cards offer high rewards rates but are pegged to a specific gas station, which may not be ideal for your business.

Some of our selections for the best business credit cards for gas can be applied for through NerdWallet, and some cannot. Below, you'll find application links for the credit cards from our partners that are available through NerdWallet, followed by the full list of our picks.

Our pick for: Business gas credit cards with rewards - 4X points plus welcome offer

The rewards on the American Express® Business Gold Card adjust according to your spending: The card has six bonus categories, such as travel, U.S. restaurants and U.S. gas stations. Is a business gas credit card right for you?

Before going all-in on a gas credit card for your business, examine your books and determine where your company does the bulk of its spending.

Are you wining and dining clients or on a first-name basis with the office supply store? How your business spends can help you narrow down the best business credit cards for your company.

If keeping a fleet of vehicles filled with fuel or gas is among your primary expenses, a business gas credit card can be a no-brainer. But if your primary business expenses fall across multiple categories, a straightforward cash-back business credit card might yield greater rewards.

Should you get a branded business gas card?

Think twice before picking a fuel card that pigeonholes you into a specific gas station. Branded business gas cards from Shell and ExxonMobil, for example, offer a fuel discount of 6 cents per gallon. That works out to 2% savings, assuming gas prices hover around $3 per gallon. But you can earn those rewards only at that specific gas station chain. You’ll get better perks and more flexibility with a general business credit card.

Branded gas cards aren’t always a no-go, though. If your employees are on the road and you want to keep spending in check, a branded gas card may do the trick. These cards can typically be used only at gas stations. And you can control when, where and what the card is used for, an appealing feature for some business owners.

Methodology

NerdWallet's Credit Cards team selects the best credit cards for small business based on overall consumer value, as evidenced by star ratings, as well as their suitability for specific kinds of small-business operators. Factors in our evaluation include annual and other fees, rewards rates, the earning structure (for example, flat-rate rewards versus bonus categories), redemption options, bonus offers for new cardholders, introductory and ongoing APRs, and other noteworthy features such as special financing arrangements, free cards for employees or tools for managing business expenses.
