If you’ve been dreaming of an escape to a tropical island paradise, a visit to Puerto Rico might be the place to make that dream a reality. Tourism on the island is on an upswing following Hurricane Maria in September 2017, and visitors will be enchanted by Puerto Rico’s vibrant culture, white sand beaches and impossibly blue water.
Here are a few reasons why Puerto Rico makes for an ideal island escape.
Beaches, boutiques and more
Whether it’s soaking up the sun on one of the island’s beaches, kayaking over a bioluminescent bay or exploring the only sub-tropical rainforest in the U.S., the opportunities to enjoy nature are endless.

Culture-seekers will revel in a trip to Old San Juan, where visitors can check out the colonial architecture, visit boutiques and go back in time at the epic fortresses that once served the island. All that exploring is sure to work up an appetite, so don’t forget to treat yourself to Puerto Rico’s cuisine.
No passport required
No passport? No problem! U.S. citizens do not need a passport to visit (you’ll still want to bring a valid photo ID and/or proof of citizenship). You’ll also save money on roaming fees when using cellular service, and you won’t have to worry about exchange rates or currency exchange fees.

Travel rewards can get you there
A flight to Puerto Rico is considered a domestic trip, and that means you won’t have to cash in as many miles as you’d need for other international Carribean trips. For example, using Delta SkyMiles to fly to San Juan at the beginning of November will cost you about 20,000 miles, while a trip to St. Maarten will cost 50,000 miles during the same time period.
