Delta Air Lines is now giving customers a way to get travel benefits without elite status or using a Delta-branded credit card. It’s called Delta SkyMiles Select, and customers who buy the annual subscription get priority boarding, eight drink vouchers and a bag tag.

Delta says these benefits are worth $100, and travelers can purchase the bundle at a “discounted” $59.

Is SkyMiles Select worth it?

Unless you really want to save just over $1.50 per drink on average, this bundle seems pretty lackluster. Priority boarding is one of those “nice-to-haves” that will ensure you get overhead bin space, but SkyMiles Select only lets you board with Main Cabin 1 — still behind pre-boarding, many high-status frequent flyer groups, and family boarding.

Here’s what these benefits would cost if you paid out of pocket:

  • Priority boarding: $15 each time.

  • Alcoholic drink: $8 to $9 each.

Unless you’re flying regularly and paying for drinks and priority boarding every time, these expenses likely won’t add up to the cost of a SkyMiles Select membership. And chances are if you fly that much, you also have another way to get these benefits with your credit card or elite status perks.

Other ways to get priority boarding

Passengers flying in Delta One, Delta Premium Select or first class get to board first. On most flights, SkyMiles members with elite status receive priority boarding as well.

For everyone else in the main cabin without status, these Delta-branded credit cards offer Main Cabin 1 priority boarding:

These cards also make your first checked bag free, so you can skip the jostling for overhead bin space altogether if you prefer. Terms apply.

Other ways to get drink discounts

All of the Delta credit cards (including the Blue Delta SkyMiles® Credit Card from American Express with a $0 annual fee), come with a 20% credit on in-flight purchases. For a $9 drink, that discount prices your beverage at $7.20, which is actually a bit cheaper than the average price of a drink if you used the SkyMiles Select bundle.

The bottom line

While Delta Sky Miles Select perks are pretty limited, a slight discount on drinks and early boarding might be worth it for people who don’t fly often yet want their experiences to be slightly more enjoyable. Other ways to get the same benefits include getting a Delta credit card or earning elite status.
