When Choice Home Warranty refuses to pay for repairs, aka exclusions
Choice covers appliances and systems that break because of everyday use, commonly known as wear and tear. This means that a plan will repair an item if it malfunctions after being used in a way that it's expected to be used.
A Choice Home Warranty plan doesn’t pay to repair items that:
Have problems that started before you purchased your plan, known as pre-existing conditions.
Broke down because of misuse or physical damage.
Are covered by a manufacturer recall or have a manufacturing defect.
Are covered under a manufacturer’s warranty.
Need only cosmetic repairs, such as a dented washing machine.
Choice also doesn’t cover the cost of routine maintenance, such as replacing filters in your HVAC unit, but this is a common exclusion among home warranties.
The fine print in Choice’s contracts
Repair guarantee
Choice’s plans come with a repair guarantee, so you won’t have to pay a second service fee if a covered repair fails within 30 days of an approved repair. However, even though a 30-day guarantee is the standard with home warranty companies, several competitors offer longer guarantees, such as Cinch Home Services and AFC Home Warranty.
‘In lieu of repair’
Like many home warranty companies, Choice can opt not to repair an item and give you money instead. This is called ‘in lieu of repair,’ and companies often choose this option when a repair will cost more than an item is worth.
When the company decides to pay a customer instead of making a repair, it pays the customer the amount it would cost Choice to replace an item. Because Choice can purchase replacement items at a discounted price, the company is likely to pay you less than what a replacement will actually cost you.
For example, a replacement dishwasher might cost you $800, but Choice could get the same dishwasher for $400. In that case, Choice can pay you $400 to replace your dishwasher instead of fixing it, and you’ll have to pay the rest of the cost to buy a new one. You’d also have to cover the cost of taxes, shipping and installation.
Matching replacements
Choice Home Warranty will try to match appliances’ features, efficiency and capacity when replacing them, but it doesn’t worry about matching an appliance’s brand, color or dimensions. This means you could end up with a replacement microwave that works as well as your old one but is too small to fit properly where your old one was installed. The replacement might also be a different color than your old one, leaving you with a new microwave that doesn’t fit in or match your kitchen.
For systems and a few other appliances, Choice’s sample contract says the company will go with builder’s grade replacements. Builder’s grade is often cheaper and might not be as durable as what you would purchase in a store. Although builder’s grade will likely work for most purposes, it means the quality might not be as good as the item Choice replaced.
Hauling off items
Choice doesn’t pay for technicians to haul away old appliances or systems when they replace them. So you’ll have to pay those costs if Choice agrees to replace an item and you need the repair company to dispose of the old one. This type of policy varies between companies, so it’s not uncommon for a company not to cover these costs.

Are not a type of insurance. Even though some companies call their service fees deductibles, home warranties do not work the same way as insurance policies. They differ in what they cover and how they pay for repairs or replacements. A home warranty is not a supplement for homeowners insurance.
Limit how much they pay. If the cost of a repair or replacement goes beyond a limit stated in your contract, you’ll have to pay the difference. For example, if the bill for a repair is $2,000 and the limit is $1,500, you’re required to cover $500. This is in addition to your monthly premium and service fee.
Can deny your claim for several reasons. Examples include if you had work performed on a covered item without approval or you modified the system or appliance.
May not pay enough to cover the full cost of replacing a covered item. Home warranties often depreciate the value of items as they age, so you’ll likely have to pay at least some money to replace an item, even if it’s covered by the contract.
