When you use your credit card while traveling overseas for business, you’re likely to come up against foreign transaction fees. These fees, also known as international transaction fees, are charged by your credit card issuer and can be as high as 3%. However, there are several business credit cards available with no foreign transaction fee. Cards without this fee can save you a significant amount of money, especially if you’re using your business credit card to pay for hotel stays or several smaller transactions while away.
There is also a range of business cards that comes with points or cash-back rewards in addition to not charging foreign transaction fees. Depending on your needs, you can choose from cards that also offer hotel perks, points on qualifying purchases or 0% intro APRs.

Using business credit cards internationally
Which business credit cards work around the world?
This depends on the merchant. The four major U.S. issuers all have merchants that accept their credit cards around the world, but some countries may have more than others.
Outside of the United States, Visa and Mastercard tend to dominate in terms of merchant acceptance. American Express has a global presence as well, but it’s smaller than its competitors. Smaller merchants are less likely to accept American Express, but larger businesses may be more likely to do so.
When should I use dynamic currency conversion?
In most cases, dynamic currency conversion exchange rates are higher than those your card issuer would charge when converting a purchase in a local currency to U.S. dollars. Your payment network takes care of conversions at a fair exchange rate when you use local currency transactions. Dynamic currency conversion, however, usually comes with a more expensive exchange rate. If your credit card comes with a foreign transaction fee, you’ll still have to pay it even if you use dynamic currency conversion.
Are chip-and-PIN cards necessary abroad?
Chip-and-PIN systems add a layer of security to credit card transactions that takes the place of signing a receipt as part of a transaction. You’ll be able to use your chip-enabled credit card overseas, but unless you also have a PIN on the card, you will not be able to use this technology. You can still use your card and provide a signature instead.
