If you’ve been considering a Southwest Airlines credit card, now might be a good time to apply.
For a limited time, starting in August 2017, both the Southwest Rapid Rewards® Premier Credit Card and the Southwest Rapid Rewards® Plus Credit Card are offering this deal: Earn 60,000 points after you spend $2,000 on purchases within the first 3 months your account is open. You can redeem points toward Southwest flights, plus hotel stays and car rentals with companies that partner with the Rapid Rewards program and more.
Previously, the sign-up bonus for both cards was 40,000 Rapid Rewards points after spending $1,000 on purchases within the first 3 months your account was open.
With both cards, you’ll earn 2 points per dollar when you spend with Southwest and Rapid Rewards partners, and you’ll earn 1 point per dollar on all other purchases. For more information on how to redeem points for flights, hotels, rentals, merchandise and other experiences, go to the Southwest point redemption FAQ page.
When choosing a Southwest credit card, there are a few key differences between the two products. The Southwest Rapid Rewards® Plus Credit Card has an annual fee of $69 and offers 3,000 anniversary points, and the Southwest Rapid Rewards® Premier Credit Card has an annual fee of $99 and offers 6,000 anniversary points. NerdWallet values Rapid Rewards points at 1 cent each, so the anniversary-point difference between the two cards equals about $30 in spending — which accounts for the $30 difference in annual fees.
However, the Southwest Rapid Rewards® Premier Credit Card doesn’t charge foreign transaction fees, whereas the Southwest Rapid Rewards® Plus Credit Card charges 3% on purchases made outside of the U.S.
For frequent travelers who live near a Southwest hub, either the Southwest Rapid Rewards® Plus Credit Card or the Southwest Rapid Rewards® Premier Credit Card might be a strong candidate for a credit card that will help you meet your travel goals.
