Well, that didn’t last long. The Marriott Rewards® Premier Plus Credit Card just did an about-face on the sign-up offer it unveiled in November 2018. The two free night awards in that offer have been replaced with the card’s previous bonus: Earn 75,000 Bonus Points after you spend $3,000 on purchases in the first 3 months from account opening.

For those who were considering the Marriott Rewards® Premier Plus Credit Card when it was offering those two free nights but didn’t pull the trigger, your indecision caught you a lucky break.

The two free night awards were valued at up to 35,000 points each, which limited where you could redeem them. The new offer — which requires the same amount of spending as the previous version — gives you much greater flexibility. Marriott assigns each of its properties a category ranking. A budget-oriented Category 1 hotel requires a 7,500-point redemption for a free night; at the other end of the scale, a swanky Category 7 hotel costs 60,000 points a night.

With 75,000 points, for example, you could splurge and use most of them to pay for one luxe night at the hotel of your dreams. Or you could juice the maximum value out of those points and redeem them for a 10-day stay at a Category 1 hotel. With over 6,700 participating hotels, you have countless possibilities just for the bonus.

Someone who finds Marriott’s redemption system challenging to navigate may have found a welcome offer of two free nights more straightforward than trying to do the math on a pile of points to maximize their value. But in general, the points bonus will likely work out to be a better deal for most, since cardholders can choose their own adventure and book when and where they would like, without being restricted to hotels that fall within a certain redemption rate.

Keep in mind that if you already have or have had a Marriott co-branded personal credit card or have recently received a bonus on one of these cards, you may not be eligible for the current offer on the Marriott Rewards® Premier Plus Credit Card, as the access to welcome bonuses on these cards is restricted. This includes cards co-branded with:

  • Marriott Rewards
  • Ritz-Carlton Rewards
  • Starwood Preferred Guest

What remains constant with the Marriott Rewards® Premier Plus Credit Card is the annual free night award, valued up to 35,000 points. This perk can easily outweigh the annual fee of $95. It’s one of the reasons the Marriott Rewards® Premier Plus Credit Card is one of our top picks for hotel cards.

Other attributes of the Marriott Rewards® Premier Plus Credit Card include:

  • 6 points per $1 spent at participating Marriott and SPG hotels.
  • 2 points per $1 spent on all other eligible purchases.
  • No foreign transaction fees.
  • Automatic Silver Elite Status each account anniversary year, with “Path to Gold” status.
  • Points that can be transferred to over 40 airline partners.
