Just in time for the holidays, the PenFed Premium Travel Rewards American Express® Card is offering an extra rewards bonus for all cardholders. From October 1st through December 31st, 2011, you’ll receive 25% extra reward points on all purchases. That amounts to 1.25% back for the base rate rewards and a whopping 6.25% back for airfare purchases. Normally, you’ll earn 1% and 5%, respectively, which is still pretty good. As if that wasn’t exciting enough, this comes on the heels of PenFed dropping their foreign transaction fee. Nice!

Members only, but it’s easy to join

You’ll have to be a member of the Pentagon Federal Credit Union to qualify for this card, but that’s not as hard as you might think. With more than a million members and over $15 billion in assets, PenFed is one of the largest credit unions in the nation, and also one of the most accessible. Most of their members are affiliated with the military, but you can be eligible to join in a variety of other ways too. If you’re a U.S. Government employee, living on a military installation, or affiliated with a military organization, you’re in.

Or if none of those things apply to you, you can join by showing support for America’s troops through a charitable donation. Donate $20 to the  National Military Family Association or $15 to Voices for America’s Troops. You can also give blood (or money) to the Red Cross.

Snazzy travel privileges abound

Points program aside, the PenFed Premium Travel Rewards American Express® Card is pretty nice for other reasons too: Earn 20,000 Bonus Points when you spend $2,500 in the first 3 months of opening your account. And the $0, which is tricky to find, even with the best travel credit cards.

And then there are the “travel privileges”. What exactly are those, you ask? All the sorts of fancy-schmantzy stuff you’d expect from an American Express card. There’s complimentary 24/7 concierge service. There’s a Priority Pass membership for airport lounge access when you spend $15,000 annually, plus two complimentary passes. There’s $100,000 of travel accident insurance, which means you’re automatically covered should you need an emergency medical evacuation. On top of all that, there’s lost luggage and baggage delay coverage, roadside assistance almost anywhere in the world, rental car damage coverage and trip delay protection. It’s always nice to have a little extra piece of mind while you’re on vacation. Check your benefits guide for more details.

Don’t forget the discounts

In addition to all the other fabulous perks (yes, there’s more!), the PenFed Premium Travel Rewards American Express® Card also makes you eligible for a variety of special deals and discounts. It also means special deals on airfare, hotels, car rentals, cruises and vacation packages. Pretty nice perks to offer at a military-focused credit union. To all you service members reading this, we’d like to say that no one deserves a vacation more than you. Thank you for your service.
