Aw nerds! Looks like this page may be out of date. Head over to our Travel Credit Cards page for updated info.
If you’re a loyal US Airways customer and frequently travel internationally, the Nerds have some exciting news: The US Airways® Premier World MasterCard® dropped its foreign transaction fees.
Wondering why this is such a big deal, and if the card is right for you? Take a look at the details below to find out.
The US Airways® Premier World MasterCard® provides a new travel perk
International travel is exciting and enriching, but it comes with certain costs. In January 2015, The US Airways® Premier World MasterCard® began waiving its foreign transaction fees to help ease some of this burden.
If you’re not familiar, foreign transaction fees are assessed by some issuers when you swipe your card abroad (or shop online with overseas retailers). Usually, foreign transaction fees amount to 3% of each purchase you make with your card. Folks who travel abroad frequently should definitely be using a card that waives this fee, because paying it could add a significant extra expense to every international trip.
By dropping its foreign transaction fees, The US Airways® Premier World MasterCard® became a much more cost-effective choice for overseas travelers.
Other features we love about The US Airways® Premier World MasterCard®
Aside from this new travel benefit, The US Airways® Premier World MasterCard® has some other great perks we love. With it, you’ll earn 2 Dividend Miles for every dollar you spend on eligible US Airways and American Airlines and 1 Dividend Mile for every dollar you spend elsewhere.
In addition, cardholders will get:
- Priority boarding Zone 2 on US Airways operated flights.
- One free checked bag on eligible bags for themselves and up to 4 travel companions on every domestic US Airways operated flight.
- A companion certificate that allows 2 guests to fly with you on a US Airways operated flight for $99 each, plus taxes and fees.
- 25% off of eligible in-flight purchases on US Airways and American Airlines flights (like snacks and drinks).
To get you started, The US Airways® Premier World MasterCard® comes with a signup bonus — Limited Time Offer: Earn 50,000 bonus miles after your first purchase and payment of the $89 annual fee*. Though its annual fee is $89, you could easily make up for that in just one round-trip flight with a companion given what you’ll save on checked bag fees.
Nerd alert: If you’re a loyal American Airlines or US Airways customer and are considering getting The US Airways® Premier World MasterCard® now is the time to do it. If you do, you may be eligible to upgrade to the AAdvantage Aviator Silver card as the two airlines move closer to full integration.
The AAdvantage Aviator Silver is a premium product with a bevy of exciting perks that Barclaycard piloted in the fall of 2014 with a small group of users. But you’ll only have the opportunity to get your hands on it when it’s more widely available if you’re an existing customer of the The US Airways® Premier World MasterCard®. The Nerds will be sure to keep you updated as we learn more!
Is The US Airways® Premier World MasterCard® right for you?
If you live near a US Airways or American Airlines hub and travel internationally frequently, The US Airways® Premier World MasterCard® is a great choice. We think it comes with a high enough signup bonus and enough extra perks to more than justify the cost of the annual fee if you fit these criteria.
But if you’re more interested in a card that allows you to use your rewards on any airline, the Barclaycard Arrival Plus™ World Elite MasterCard® is an excellent alternative. With it, you’ll earn 2 miles for every dollar you spend.
When it comes time to redeem the miles you’ve earned with the Barclaycard Arrival Plus™ World Elite MasterCard®, you’ll have lots of choices. Simply book your travel as you normally would with the card, then pay yourself back with your rewards in the form of a statement credit.
For overseas travel, the Barclaycard Arrival Plus™ World Elite MasterCard® has you covered. It charges no foreign transaction fees and comes chip-enabled with PIN capability.
The Barclaycard Arrival Plus™ World Elite MasterCard® also comes with a signup bonus: Earn 50,000 bonus miles after you spend $3,000 on purchases in the first 90 days — that's enough to redeem for a $500 travel statement credit. Its annual fee is $0 for the first year, then $89.
