Amica earned 4.5 stars out of 5 for overall performance. NerdWallet’s ratings are determined by our editorial team. The scoring formula takes into account consumer experience, complaint data from the National Association of Insurance Commissioners and financial strength ratings.

Founded in 1907, Amica is the oldest mutual auto insurer in the United States owned entirely by its policyholders. While it may not be one of the nation’s largest insurers, the company is mighty when it comes to customer service.

Why you can trust NerdWallet: Our writers and editors follow strict editorial guidelines to ensure fairness and accuracy in our coverage so you can choose the insurance policy that works best for you. These carrier ratings are specific to auto insurance — a company's rating for other products may be different on our site. See our criteria for evaluating auto insurance companies.

In our auto insurance reviews, our editorial team considers both the customer and the insurer. These are some of the factors we take into account:

Financial strength. We use A.M. Best ratings to confirm an insurer’s long-term financial stability and ability to pay claims. NerdWallet does not recommend companies with a rating lower than a B.

Complaints. These ratings are based on complaints to state regulators relative to a company’s size, according to three years’ worth of data from the National Association of Insurance Commissioners. The best auto insurance companies have fewer than the expected number of complaints.

Ease of use. This category looks at how easily consumers can interact with an insurer through its mobile app and website. This includes how much coverage information is offered online, whether a user can start and track a claim online and get a quote and mobile app scores based on the Apple and Google Play store ratings.

Discounts. We look at both the kind of discounts a company offers and the total number of discounts available.

Where Amica stands out

Low customer complaints. Amica has fewer customer complaints compared to other companies of its size.

Dividend-paying policies. Amica lets customers choose between a traditional and dividend-paying policy. Although dividend-paying policies may cost more upfront than a traditional policy, they can help you save money over time.

Where Amica falls short

State availability. Policies are sold in most states, with a few exceptions. Amica does not sell auto, home or renters insurance in Hawaii. Home and renters insurance are also not available in Alaska.

Amica auto insurance coverage

When you're shopping for car insurance coverage, it's important to understand what car insurance coverage you want and what you’re required to buy. For instance, most states require a minimum amount of car insurance to drive a vehicle. Alternatively, if you want extra protection, you may be interested in full coverage insurance. Read about the most common types of car insurance coverage to see how they work.

Amica offers the standard menu of auto insurance coverage, but you can also buy additional coverage as needed for an extra fee. Though details vary by state, options generally include:

Gap coverage. This coverage pays out when the amount on your car loan or lease is greater than the value of your vehicle at the time it’s declared a total loss.

Rental reimbursement coverage. If your car is in the shop due to a covered loss, this coverage will pay for a rental car.

Identity fraud monitoring. This service monitors your credit files and personal information, plus provides access to a fraud specialist if your identity is stolen.

Full glass coverage. You pay no deductible for glass repairs or replacement.

Prestige rental coverage. You get up to $5,000 toward the rental of a comparable car if yours is in an accident.

New car replacement. You’ll receive a new car if your vehicle is declared a total loss. This only applies if your car is less than a year old and has less than 15,000 miles.

Good driver rewards. This program allows you to earn points for good driving, the amount of time you’re with the company, adding other insurance policies and referring new customers. Points can be used toward:

  • Accident forgiveness, which prevents a price increase if you get in a crash.

  • Disappearing deductible, which reduces or eliminates your deductible.

🤓Nerdy Tip

Amica sells a package called Platinum Choice Auto that includes credit monitoring, full glass coverage, prestige rental coverage and new car replacement coverage. So if you’re interested in getting all the bells and whistles and live in a state where this package is offered, you can purchase that policy instead of each coverage option a la carte.

Additional policy option. As a mutual insurance company, Amica does not have investors or stockholders; the policyholders own the company. As such, along with a wide variety of coverage, Amica offers customers the choice between buying traditional or dividend-paying policies.

Depending on your state and the type of policy you're getting, you may be able to pay extra upfront for a dividend-paying auto, home, marine or umbrella liability policy. By doing so, you'll likely receive a portion of what you paid into your policy back every year. And although this option may cost more initially, you'll typically spend less on a dividend-paying policy than a traditional policy over time.

Methodology

Insurer complaints methodology

NerdWallet examined complaints received by state insurance regulators and reported to the National Association of Insurance Commissioners in 2021-2023. To assess how insurers compare to one another, the NAIC calculates a complaint index each year for each subsidiary, measuring its share of total complaints relative to its size, or share of total premiums in the industry. To evaluate a company’s complaint history, NerdWallet calculated a similar index for each insurer, weighted by market shares of each subsidiary, over the three-year period. NerdWallet conducts its data analysis and reaches conclusions independently and without the endorsement of the NAIC. Ratios are determined separately for auto, home (including renters and condo) and life insurance.

Auto insurance ratings methodology

NerdWallet’s auto insurance ratings reward companies for customer-first features and practices. Ratings are based on weighted averages of scores in several categories, including financial strength, consumer complaints and discounts. Our “ease of use” category looks at factors such as website transparency and how easy it is to file a claim. Using our editorial discretion, we also consider customer satisfaction surveys. These ratings are a guide, but we encourage you to shop around and compare several insurance quotes to find the best rate for you. NerdWallet does not receive compensation for any reviews. Read our editorial guidelines and full ratings methodology for auto insurance.
