Nerdy takeaways
  • Marriott Bonvoy® points are worth about 0.9 cent each.

  • Marriott Bonvoy® points offer below-average value for a hotel reward program.

  • The value of Marriott Bonvoy® points is about the same as it was four years ago.

Whether you have a load of Marriott Bonvoy® points from credit cards, vacations or business travel, you might be curious how much these Bonvoy points are actually worth.

Based on our analysis, the Marriott points value is about 0.9 cent each. You should aim for award redemptions that offer 0.9 cent or more in value from your Marriott points.

What does this value mean?

We calculated that Marriott Bonvoy® points have a value of 0.9 cent based on comparing actual redemption options when paying with either cash or points.

Unlike some other valuations you’ll find online, it is based on data rather than a hypothetical maximized value.

If you’re getting more than 0.9 cent per point in value for a particular redemption, you’re doing well. If you’re getting less, consider looking for another redemption option.

This valuation can also give you a sense of how much a given Marriott Bonvoy promotion or credit card offer is worth. Though keep in mind that it is only an estimate and not a hard-and-fast cash value.

** There are two Marriott Bonvoy cards with substantially the same benefits but they come from different issuers. The Marriott Bonvoy Bountiful™ Card, described above, is from Chase. Its near-twin is the Marriott Bonvoy Bevy™ American Express® Card, which you can read about here.

How has the Marriott points value changed over time?

We have been tracking the value of Marriott Bonvoy® points in the same way for five years, and unfortunately, the value has decreased a fair amount due to the pandemic and the switch to dynamic pricing. This is especially bad news for Marriott loyalists or for those who signed up for Marriott-branded credit cards with the expectation of higher value.

How did we determine the value of Marriott Bonvoy® points?

We compared cash and reward (point) bookings across many hotels in the Marriott portfolio, including both domestic and international destinations. We calculated the value per point of each redemption, then calculated the overall value from there.

We took care to include the taxes and fees for both reward and cash bookings to ensure we were comparing the overall value. And we used the 75th percentile value for our overall valuation, which is the equivalent of comparing four different redemption options and picking the one that offers the best value.
