IHG Sweet Spots: To Maximize Your Points, Think International

Many or all of the products featured here are from our partners who compensate us. This may influence which products we write about and where and how the product appears on a page. However, this does not influence our evaluations. Our opinions are our own. Here is a list of our partners and here's how we make money.
If you’re looking to get the most value out of your IHG points — look international. Especially in many Asian countries where hotels have incredibly low cash rates than comparable properties in the U.S., the points rate to book IHG hotels comes out even lower.
NerdWallet values IHG points at 0.8 cent each. So, when looking for IHG sweet spots, calculate the value of the points rate versus the dollar cost. To make it easy, we've created an IHG points calculator to do the math for you.
So whether you've been saving your points to splurge on a free night at a luxury resort or prefer to stretch your points further at budget hotels, we've found some great IHG point redemption opportunities. That said, not all hotels are equal when it comes to redeeming points for free nights. There are a handful of hidden gems that allow you to get maximum value from your points.
Let's dive into some of the best sweet spots within the IHG One Rewards Club program.

IHG award chart
IHG no longer publishes an award chart. However, award nights generally cost between 10,000-70,000 points per night.
Exceptional point redemptions are when the nightly rate is substantially higher than the baseline value of IHG points. For example, if the nightly paid rate for a hotel is $300 and the points rate is 30,000, you would be getting 1 cent in value per point. You can compare this with our current valuation of IHG points, which is 0.8 cent each.
IHG sweet spots
As with any award redemption, the most valuable use is the one that makes sense for your travel style and needs. That said, some hotels offer particularly high-value redemption opportunities in terms of paid rate vs. points cost. Let’s dive into some of our favorite sweet spot redemptions with IHG One Rewards Club:

The InterContinental Kuala Lumpur. Image courtesy of IHG.
InterContinental Kuala Lumpur
Staying at the InterContinental, which is IHG's premier brand, generally isn't cheap. But if you've always dreamed of rolling up to an InterContinental — but don't want to pony up too many points — look to Kuala Lumpur. This hotel provides among the sweetest of the sweet spots, with not only a low points rate to begin with, but an excellent ratio of low points rates relative to cash prices. You can book it for just 13,000 points per night, which we value at roughly $100. The 473-room, five-star InterContinental Kuala Lumpur is located near the iconic Petronas Twin Towers, the city’s Convention Centre and other shopping and entertainment venues.

InterContinental Mendoza, Argentina
You'll be hard-pressed to find Intercontinental hotels priced at only 20,000 points per night, but that's what you'll pay for an award night at the Intercontinental Mendoza. This luxury hotel features all the amenities you'd expect, including an indoor pool, casino, full spa and more.
