Like many people, you hate paying annual fees on credit cards. You also enjoy earning miles on all of your purchases. With the Delta SkyMiles® Blue American Express Card, you can earn miles and avoid the annual fee entirely. Terms apply.
If you like flying on Delta Air Lines but you’re not a frequent business traveler or otherwise on a plane every other week, this card should probably be on your radar. You’re able to save on in-flight purchases, earn miles on everyday purchases and even earn some bonus miles on car rentals and online shopping.
The DNA of the card
On the surface, the Delta SkyMiles® Blue American Express Card is similar to other Delta credit cards in the American Express portfolio. You can earn 2x miles on Delta purchases and 1x mile everywhere else. You’ll also earn 2x miles at restaurants. There’s no limit to the number of miles you can earn and they will never expire. Terms apply.
Currently, the welcome bonus is as follows: Earn 10,000 bonus miles after you spend $500 in purchases on your new Card in your first 3 months. Terms Apply.
Whenever you use your Delta SkyMiles® Blue American Express Card onboard a Delta Air Lines flight, you’ll save 20% in the form of a statement credit. It’s automatic, so just use your card for the purchase and the statement credit will appear shortly after. This will apply to almost everything that you buy onboard (think food, drinks and headsets).
Frequent road warriors
If you’ve ever rented a car, you know that the actual car rental might be the cheapest part of your reservation. Often, the cost for the collision waiver and other additional fees can add up to just as much, if not more than, the rental itself.
When you use your Delta SkyMiles® Blue American Express Card to pay for the entire vehicle rental and decline the rental company’s collision damage waiver, you can be covered if the car is damaged or even stolen. There are certain restrictions in place (you can’t rent a Ferrari and expect that to be covered), so make sure to read the terms and conditions beforehand. Terms apply.
The coverage is secondary and does not provide liability, so make sure to double check with your car insurance before declining additional coverage.
Savvy online shoppers
With ShopRunner, you’ve got a network of over 100 stores where you can choose free two-day shipping. Membership is free with the Delta SkyMiles® Blue American Express Card.
Foodies of all ages
Starting on Jan. 30, 2020 the Delta SkyMiles® Blue American Express Card is going to have a few extra benefits. While currently you earn 2x SkyMiles at U.S. restaurants, that benefit will expand to the rest of the world as well. Now whether you’re in Little Italy, New York, or Rome, you’ll earn 2x SkyMiles while enjoying delicious cuisine.
As exciting as it is to use your card anywhere in the world, those pesky foreign transaction fees tend to get in the way. No one enjoys the surprise of a surcharge on their bill when they get home from a relaxing vacation.
Currently, cardholders pay a 2.7% foreign transaction fee — but that fee goes away on Jan. 30. When you check out at the register overseas and you have the option to pay in U.S. dollars or foreign currency, you can choose foreign currency without worrying about a fee.
Starting Jan. 30, Delta SkyMiles® Blue American Express Card cardholders will be eligible for Pay With Miles. If you have a minimum of 5,000 SkyMiles in your account, you can redeem some of them to offset the cost of your Delta flight. Redemptions must be done in 5,000-mile increments and miles are worth 1 cent each. More options are always a good thing, so add this to your toolkit as a way to redeem miles for your Delta flights.
Is this card for you?
We find the Delta SkyMiles® Blue American Express Card to be a great starter card for those looking to dip their toe in the Delta SkyMiles credit card world.
You won’t get any free checked bags like the other cards in the portfolio, but from a mileage-earning standpoint, it offers solid rewards.
If you fly infrequently and want a way to earn Delta SkyMiles without paying an annual fee, then this card is for you. If you fly every other week for business, check your bags and want to accumulate more rewards even faster, then perhaps the Delta SkyMiles® Gold American Express Card or Delta SkyMiles® Platinum American Express Card are more your speed.
