How do business credit cards determine limits?

Business credit card issuers determine your credit limit based on your ability to pay. Providers can evaluate this standard differently, but information that may affect their decision includes:
  • Your personal income and debt.
  • Your personal credit score.
  • Your business’s credit history.
  • Your business’s annual income.
  • Your business’s estimated monthly credit card spending.
Understanding these factors — and potentially improving them before you apply — will put you in the best position to get the best business credit card possible. If you’re approved for a card with a lower limit than you want, see if you can provide the issuer with additional business information to receive a larger line of credit.

What business credit card gives the highest limit?

Business credit card issuers typically don’t publish their maximum limits. But looking for the following features and benefits may offer clues around which might offer you the greatest spending power.
Annual fees or high rewards rates: Business credit cards with large annual fees or generous reward rates may give you the highest limits because these cards are designed for big spenders or customers with excellent credit.
No preset spending limit: This can take several forms. For instance, some American Express business credit cards offer a flexible limit that adapts based on factors such as your purchase, payment and credit history.
For a true no-limit option, you’ll likely need a business charge card. These may not put a cap on your spending, but you’ll have to pay off that entire bill in full each month — and face potential consequences like late fees and credit damage if you don’t.
No personal guarantee: If you see a business credit card with no personal guarantee, it’s probably a corporate card. Corporate cards often have no credit limit at all. Like charge cards, they may require you to pay the balance off in full every month.
The lack of a personal guarantee means you won’t individually be on the hook for those charges, but also that your business will likely need a significant business bank account balance or millions in annual revenue to qualify.

How to choose a high-limit business credit card

There’s no way to know what your credit card’s limit will be until you apply and are approved. One thing you can look at is whether an issuer publishes its minimum credit line. For instance, the Ink Business Preferred® Credit Card lists a minimum credit line of $5,000.
While this is a starting point and many businesses may qualify for a larger amount, it can give you a sense of your baseline. In general, business credit cards offer higher limits than personal cards do.
Since you won’t know your credit limit until after you’ve applied, it’s best to choose a business credit card based on its other features — like its rewards rates, annual fee and whether you can carry a balance.
Then, focus your search on cards you’re likely to qualify for based on your credit score. In general, you’ll need good or excellent credit to qualify for a high-limit business credit card.

Can you increase the limit on your business credit card?

Even if your business credit card starts with a low limit, it isn't set in stone. If you handle your account responsibly — or your financial situation improves — you can always request a higher credit limit.
You may be able to adjust your credit limit on your own as well. If you have multiple cards from the same issuer, they may let you move spending power from one card to another. You may be able to do this via your online account, or by contacting the card company directly.

Methodology

NerdWallet's business credit card team selects the best small-business credit cards without outside input from partners or other business interests. We evaluate business cards based on value and simplicity, weighing fees, sign-up bonuses and reward rates, alongside perks like interest-free periods, statement credits and elite status (for travel cards). Business cards that earn the highest scores deliver the most value to the greatest number of business owners.
Notable changes to our methodology for 2025 include factoring in whether spending on employee cards earns rewards and counts toward the welcome offer requirements. We also now consider what information the card issuer reports to consumer credit bureaus. Learn how NerdWallet rates small-business credit cards.
