Analysis: Chase checking bonuses

Chase Total Checking®

The Chase Total Checking® bonus compares favorably with those offered by other financial institutions. It comes with a few strings attached, but the terms are clear:

  • Open a new checking account, deposit $25 or more and set up direct deposit within 60 days
  • The bank will deposit $200 into the account within 10 business days
  • If you close the account within six months of opening, you’ll have to return the bonus
  • If you already have a checking account with Chase, you won’t be eligible for this offer

Chase Total Checking® comes with a monthly fee of $12 that is waived if you have $500 in monthly direct deposits, maintain a daily balance of at least $1,500 or have an average daily balance of at least $5,000 in qualifying linked deposits.

Chase Premier Plus Checking

Chase customers can get a $300 bonus if they sign up for Premier Plus Checking, with the same requirements as the Chase Total Checking® bonus.

This account comes with a $25 monthly fee. To avoid it, you’ll need to maintain an average daily balance of at least $15,000 in qualifying linked deposits or have a Chase mortgage that you pay automatically via a Chase account.

Analysis: Chase Savings bonus

The $150 sign-up bonus on Chase Savings℠ might be more difficult to land:

  • There’s a $10,000 minimum deposit requirement
  • The money must stay in the account for at least 90 days
  • As with the checking account sign-up bonuses, you must keep the account open for at least six months or forfeit the bonus

Setting $10,000 or more aside in this account might make sense if you need a place to store an emergency fund. This fund would equal three to six months’ worth of living expenses and is best kept in a bank account to which you have easy access. But if you don’t have $10,000 to save, this sign-up bonus is probably not for you. And that wouldn’t be a tragedy, as rates across most of Chase’s savings products are minimal.
