The promotion offering bonus cash back at restaurants for new cardholders expired on May 3, 2017. See our credit card details pages for the Blue Cash Preferred® Card from American Express and the Blue Cash Everyday® Card from American Express for current offers.

Dining out will be significantly cheaper for new holders of American Express Blue Cash credit cards, thanks to a generous promotion that offers 10% cash back on up to $2,000 in U.S. restaurant spending in the first six months. To qualify, you must apply for either card by May 3.

The offer, introduced Feb. 23, comes on top of the standard welcome bonuses for the Blue Cash Preferred® Card from American Express and the Blue Cash Everyday® Card from American Express. Coupled with these cards’ generous built-in rewards for U.S. supermarket spending, a typical family of four could save $369 on food alone over six months, according to NerdWallet calculations.

The full details:

  • The Blue Cash Preferred® Card from American Express offers 6% cash back at U.S. supermarkets (up to $6,000 spent per year — then 1%), 3% back at U.S. gas stations and select U.S. department stores, and 1% cash back on everything else. The annual fee is: $95. Bonus offer for new cardholders: Limited Time Offer: Apply by 5/3/17 – Earn 10% cash back on purchases at U.S. Restaurants in the first 6 months, up to $200 back. Earn $150 back after you spend $1,000 in purchases on your new Card in your first 3 months. Terms Apply.
  •  The Blue Cash Everyday® Card from American Express gives you 3% back at U.S. supermarkets (up to $6,000 spent per year — then 1%), 2% back at U.S. gas stations and select U.S. department stores, and 1% back on all other purchases. The annual fee is $0. Bonus offer for new cardholders: Limited Time Offer: Apply by 5/3/17 – Earn 10% cash back on purchases at U.S. Restaurants in the first 6 months, up to $200 back. Earn $100 back after you spend $1,000 in purchases on your new Card in your first 3 months. You will receive cash back in the form of statement credits. Terms Apply.

According to the most recent Consumer Expenditure Survey from the federal Bureau of Labor Statistics, the average four-person household spends $5,624 per year on food at home and $4,148 on dining out. At those spending levels, a family that paid with a new Blue Cash Preferred® Card from American Express would save about $369 in six months. A family with a new Blue Cash Everyday® Card from American Express would save about $284.

AmEx has offered 10% reward promotions in the past for its Blue Cash cards. In fall 2016, new cardholders could get 10% cash back at Amazon, up to $200, in the first six months from account opening. In the spring of that year, the cards offered a similar 10% promotion at wireless phone service providers.

The new AmEx offer on its popular cash-back cards comes at a time when credit card rewards are becoming more lucrative industrywide. Still, 10% cash back, even for a limited time, is extraordinary.
