Attention, heads of household: The Nerds have found a couple of great cards for earning killer rewards on your daily spending — the Citi ThankYou® Preferred Card and Blue Cash Everyday® Card from American Express.
Having a family is an expensive endeavor — raising one child from birth to age 18 costs a whopping $245,000, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, and that figure doesn’t include college savings. To help offset the costs your family takes on as it expands, you should get a solid rewards credit card (or two) that offers extra rewards on the purchases you make most. Read on to learn more about our favorite card pairing for families.
The Citi ThankYou® Preferred Card offers 2 ThankYou points per dollar spent on dining and entertainment spending, and 1 point on every dollar spent on everything else. ThankYou points can be redeemed for a multitude of rewards, but you’ll get the best value at 1 cent each on travel certificates, mortgage and student loan payments, and certain gift cards.
To count as entertainment spending, merchants you spend with must be coded as such. Citi offers these extra entertainment points to merchants coded as live performances, sports promoters, amusement parks, movie theaters, video rental stores, record stores, tourist attractions and museums.
The card has an annual fee of $0 and an introductory APR offer of 0% on Purchases and Balance Transfers for 12 months, and then the ongoing APR of 14.24% - 24.24% Variable APR.
With the Blue Cash Everyday® Card from American Express, you’ll be rewarded for spending on the things your family needs most. It offers 3% back at U.S. supermarkets (up to $6,000 in spending — then 1%), 2% back at U.S. gas stations and certain U.S. department stores, and 1% back on everything else. There’s also a signup bonus: $100 statement credit after you spend $1,000 in purchases on your new Card within the first 3 months. Terms Apply.
