How to shop for an SUV
Sport-utility vehicles are the most popular vehicle type in the U.S., and they come in a wide range of shapes, sizes and prices. When deciding which model is right for you, there are a few things to consider.
Seating and cargo. You're likely interested in an SUV so that you can carry more people or more stuff — or both. Most SUVs accommodate at least five passengers across two rows of seats, while some models offer a third row. Unused seats in the second or third rows can be folded down and added to the vehicle's cargo space.
Safety and driver's assistance. Consumer Reports surveyed its members about the safety features they like the most, and the top responses included systems for automatic emergency braking, blind-spot warning and rear cross-traffic warning. Technologies like these (and there are many more than these) help you see more of what's around and generally aim to make driving easier. Consider what you think you need and what you might want help with.
Two-wheel or front-wheel drive (2WD/FWD) vs. all-wheel drive (AWD). This is about traction on the road or off. Most passenger vehicles, including lots of SUVs, use front-wheel drive. This means the power from the engine is directed to the front two wheels. It's cheaper to make, and vehicles that have it can be cheaper to buy. All-wheel drive SUVs can have their engine's power routed to, yup, all of the wheels. AWD systems can be helpful if you drive in ice, snow or just sloppy conditions.
How to shop for an auto loan
Getting an auto loan can go quickly: If you meet credit requirements, you may be able to walk into a dealership and drive away with a car and loan today. Still, it pays to take your time to tick off the following steps, to ensure you find the best loan with the lowest rate for your financial situation.
1. Check your credit report and credit scores. You’re entitled to a free copy of your report every 12 months from each of the major reporting bureaus.
2. Shop around at more than one lender. Survey large and regional banks and local credit unions, as well as online lenders and loan aggregators.

3. Get preapproved. This is different from pre-qualifying, and requires a hard credit pull that may temporarily lower your credit scores. But because the lender will get more information about you and your credit history, the estimated rate should be closer to the final rate you receive upon loan approval.
4. Set a budget. Your loan offers will show the most you can borrow, the interest rate and an estimated monthly payment.
5. Select and finalize your loan. If you decide to buy a car at a dealership or online retailer, don’t skip applying for financing there too.
