Straight Talk Wireless has emerged as a leader in low-cost home phone services. Having a landline was once costly, yet necessary for many households.

Now that most people use mobile phones and can get so many deals on those, the price to have a landline has dropped significantly. So if you’re shopping around for an inexpensive landline, you’re probably curious to find out if Straight Talk Wireless is actually the best option out there.

Straight Talk Wireless Home Phone Plan

Straight Talk is a month-to-month TracFone service sold by Wal-Mart. Here's some of the basic information

  • Contract: This no-contract service offers ultimate flexibility, as service can be adjusted or even cancelled at any time.

  • Monthly fees: Two plans are offered ? $15 per month unlimited nationwide calling or $30 unlimited nationwide plus international calling.

  • Equipment: You'll need to make a one-time purchase of a wireless home phone device. It's $99.98 at full price,

  • Phones: Straight Talk allows you to keep your existing home phones - up to two corded devices and unlimited cordless.

  • Use of Internet: No, there’s no high-speed Internet or landline required, so if you don’t already have these services installed in your home, you don’t need to get them.

  • No hidden costs: While there aren't many frills on Straight Talk's service, they don't charge many additional fees.

  • New phone number: The choice of whether to keep your existing phone number or get a new one is entirely up to you.

  • Reliability: The company elusively markets its usage of “America’s largest, most reliable network.” This is Verizon, so as long as your area has coverage from this carrier, you should have no issues. Keep in mind that more-rural areas are less likely to have coverage.

How does Straight Talk stack up?

Straight Talk has many similarities to close competitors Vonage and NetTalk. All three offer low-cost plans with no contract required, as well as making the customer put down a one-time purchase for the necessary equipment.

However, Straight Talk has the clear advantage when it comes to hidden fees. NetTalk charges customers a fee of $19.99 to transfer their existing phone number, while Straight Talk does not. Both Vonage and NetTalk require customers to have an Internet connection, but that’s not essential with Straight Talk. Not only can customers avoid costly monthly Internet fees, they also enjoy a more reliable service, as they don’t have to depend on often spotty Internet connections to make calls.

The $15-$30 plans offered by Straight Talk are significantly cheaper than traditional home phone services. For example, Verizon landline services are priced from $62.99 to $64.99 per month.

Straight Talk is probably the best value out there

Straight Talk offers all the basics of a home phone service, without the hefty price tag. Customers enjoy unlimited local and long distance calling, voicemail, caller ID, three-way calling and more, without the constraints of a contract.

When compared to its competitors, Straight Talk Home Phone services is probably the best option for most people. However, it is important to note that Straight Talk is not compatible with home security systems, fax machines, DVR services, credit card images, or medical alert systems. Customers with these unique needs must stick with their local home phone service until Straight Talk is able to accommodate them.

Nevertheless, the fact that Straight Talk doesn’t rely on an Internet connection is a huge advantage. Not only do people without an Internet connection not have to worry, or pay the extra monthly service fees, but any frustration caused by a fickle Internet connection when powering your phone is gone.

Simply put, Straight Talk is easy to use, affordable, and reliable, making it a solid choice for any home phone service. It doesn't have any bells or whistles, but if you're just looking to cut costs, this is a great choice.
