Americans are demanding more from their credit cards than just a convenient payment method. They want perks, like cash back, free travel and zero-interest balance transfers.
But when it comes to credit cards, one size doesn’t fit all. Some cards are more popular because of what they offer. To get an idea of the most popular new credit cards, we analyzed over 400,000 visits to NerdWallet.com to see which types of cards were clicked on the most in each state.
Favorite cards in the U.S.
We also looked at each state’s average credit score in light of the card choices. We found that for residents in 16 states, cash back rewards credit cards were the most popular choice of NerdWallet visitors.
A cash-back card for those with good credit was the most frequent choice in the top four states with the highest average credit scores: Minnesota, New Hampshire, North Dakota and South Dakota. In general, people in the Midwest are big fans of this kind of card.
Meanwhile, in Mississippi, which has the lowest average credit score in the nation, a secured credit card, a good choice for those with lower credit scores, was most popular.
A travel rewards credit card was the top choice in 20 states and Washington, D.C. This kind of card was especially sought after on the West Coast — it’s the most popular card in Washington, Oregon and California.
A balance transfer credit card was close behind as the most popular card in 12 states.
