Just in time for last-minute online Christmas shopping, popular electronics retailer Best Buy is hosting a free two-day shipping promotion on eligible orders of $35 and up.

The free (and fast) shipping offer applies to thousands of items sold by the technology giant via its online storefront. Eligible products will have expedited shipping automatically selected in shoppers’ virtual shopping carts.

How to Get It

In order to determine if a product is eligible for the deal before you add it to your cart, look for FREE 2-DAY SHIPPING under the item’s price. Excluded products include music, movies, pre-owned games, select Best Buy Marketplace items, scheduled delivery items and items displaying an “in-store only” message.

Also, if you’re using any coupons toward your online purchase, be sure to check that such offers don’t drop your total below the $35 minimum, as this will make you ineligible for the free shipping offer.

Why It Stands Out

A free shipping promotion such as Best Buy’s on orders at or above a certain minimum purchase amount definitely isn’t anything new in the world of online retailers, but free expedited shipping on totals as low as $35 is certainly something for savvy shoppers to take notice of.

A Star Tribune report speculates that the Best Buy offer could be an attempt to compete with online giant Amazon, which offers free two-day shipping to the website’s Amazon Prime members.

Unlike Amazon Prime, however, Best Buy customers don’t need to be paid members in order to take advantage of this offer.

Plus, with this free two-day shipping (as opposed to standard shipping, which Best Buy estimates typically runs three to seven business days), shoppers can make their holiday purchases later in the month without worrying about having to pay a high price to ensure their gifts arrive before Christmas.

Thus, a free shipping incentive could be a deciding factor when shoppers choose where to spend their dollars on online purchases in the home stretch before the holiday.

Sizing Up the Shipping Competition

So how does Best Buy’s offer compare with those of other major retailers? Here’s a roundup of some of the current shipping deals being advertised by a few big-name stores. Keep in mind many of these apply to qualifying items only.

  • Target: Free standard shipping (3-5 business days) on all orders through Dec. 20
  • Walmart: Free value shipping (6- to 8-day delivery) on orders of $50 or more
  • Toys R Us: Free economy shipping (6- to 9-day delivery) on orders of $49 or more
  • JCPenney: Free shipping (4-7 business days) on purchases of $49 or more
  • Kohl’s: Free standard shipping with $50 purchase
  • Sears: Free standard shipping on qualifying orders of $59 or more
  • Victoria’s Secret: Free standard shipping on orders of $100 (with code ‘FREESHIP100’)

No matter where you decide to shop online this season, be sure to check each specific retailer’s shipping promotion for details, exclusions and exceptions.
