Autumn vacations are underrated, but cooler weather, fewer tourists and cheaper flights could induce people to book a fall getaway.

That comes with the unofficially dubbed “Cheap Flight Day” on Aug. 23, the start of a period when fliers can expect to save on airfares for the coming months.

Some airlines such as Southwest, JetBlue and Virgin America already have launched sales.

To find the cheapest prices, it helps to book at least 30 days before takeoff.

Blackout dates may occur. Visit the specific airline’s website to see details and exclusions.
