About Assurant renters insurance

4.0

NerdWallet rating

Assurant renters insurance earned 4 stars out of 5 for overall performance. Assurant renters insurance includes coverage that most other insurance companies charge extra for (or don’t include at all), offering more value for your premium. However, the company receives far more consumer complaints than expected for an insurer of its size.

If you need less coverage, Assurant sells a bare-bones “Liability Only” policy to renters living in its partner properties.

Our star ratings are based on consumer complaint data from the National Association of Insurance Commissioners; financial strength grades from AM Best; coverage and discounts available; and the overall consumer experience. See our criteria for evaluating renters insurance companies.

Our writers and editors follow strict editorial guidelines that ensure fairness and accuracy in order to help you choose the financial products that work best for you. Here is a list of our partners and here’s how we make money.

Where Assurant stands out

Coverage. There aren’t many renters policies that cover bedbug damage and extermination, but Assurant’s does. Replacement cost coverage for your personal belongings is another nice perk.

Quick quotes. It’s easy to estimate your price on the Assurant website.

Where Assurant falls short

Consumer complaints. Assurant’s high volume of complaints to state regulators suggests that its policyholders aren’t always satisfied.

No mobile app. Renters who like the convenience of an app will have to use the site’s website instead.

State availability

Assurant renters insurance is available in all 50 states plus Washington, D.C.

Availability may change at any time. Coverage may not be available to all renters in a given state.

Assurant renters insurance coverage

Landlords sometimes require tenants to purchase a policy with a minimum amount of renters liability insurance, but otherwise, the coverage you choose is generally up to you. Below are the four types of coverage included in most standard renters policies:

Type of coverage

What it does

Covers your clothing, furniture, electronics and other belongings.

Pays for hotel stays, restaurant meals or other expenses if you have to live elsewhere while your home undergoes covered repairs.

Pays out if you're responsible for injuries to other people or damage to their property.

Covers injuries to other people in your home, regardless of fault.

The standard Assurant renters insurance policy covers not only the things you’d expect, but also a few items most insurers don’t include.

For example, the policy offers replacement cost coverage for your personal belongings rather than actual cash value. That means if you have to file a claim, you’ll get enough money to buy brand-new items rather than a lower amount reflecting their depreciated value. Many insurance companies charge extra for replacement cost coverage.

Assurant also covers liability claims and damaged belongings due to mold. And if you want to add your roommate to your policy, you can do so at no extra cost. (Just be sure you’ve got enough coverage for everyone’s stuff.)

Although most renters insurance doesn’t cover bedbugs, in some states Assurant’s policies will pay for extermination and other bedbug-related costs. Depending on where you live, you may also have coverage for spoiled food if your power goes out or for additional living expenses if you have to relocate due to a flood. (Note that the policy doesn't include coverage for flood damage — you’ll need to purchase separate flood insurance for renters.)

You can add optional coverage to your policy for the following scenarios:

  • Damage caused by pets.

  • Rent payment(s) if you lose your job.

  • Earthquake damage.

  • Damage from a backed-up drain or sewer.

Looking for a cheaper renters insurance policy? If you live in one of Assurant’s partner properties located across the U.S., you can choose the company’s Liability Only policy. This no-frills option won't cover personal belongings, but will cover damage that you cause by accident, either to your own unit or a neighbor’s. For instance, if you unintentionally start a kitchen fire, the policy might pay to replace your apartment’s charred walls and cabinetry, but not your oven mitts.

It also covers some personal liability expenses if your dog bites a guest.

Discounts

You can save on fees by paying your renters insurance premium all at once, upfront, rather than on a monthly or quarterly basis.

Depending on where you live, you may be able to get a discount for having safety and security devices such as alarms, deadbolts or sprinkler systems. Other discounts vary by state, too.

Consumer complaints

Assurant had far more than the expected number of home insurance complaints to state regulators relative to its size, according to three years’ worth of data from the National Association of Insurance Commissioners. (The NAIC's home insurance complaints cover a range of policy types, including renters and condo insurance.)

Renters insurance star ratings methodology

NerdWallet’s renters insurance ratings reward companies for customer-first features and practices. Ratings are based on weighted averages of scores in several categories, including financial strength, consumer complaints, coverage options, discounts and online experience. These ratings are a guide, but we encourage you to shop around and compare several insurance quotes to find the best rate for you. NerdWallet does not receive compensation for any reviews. Read our full renters insurance rating methodology.

Insurer complaints methodology

NerdWallet examined complaints received by state insurance regulators and reported to the National Association of Insurance Commissioners in 2021-2023. To assess how insurers compare to one another, the NAIC calculates a complaint index each year for each subsidiary, measuring its share of total complaints relative to its size, or share of total premiums in the industry. To evaluate a company’s complaint history, NerdWallet calculated a similar index for each insurer, weighted by market shares of each subsidiary, over the three-year period. NerdWallet conducts its data analysis and reaches conclusions independently and without the endorsement of the NAIC. Ratios are determined separately for auto, home (including renters and condo) and life insurance.
