Is the Capital One Venture Credit Card Worth Its Annual Fee?

If you're a frequent flyer, you likely know the pain of searching for and obtaining the perfect travel credit card for your travel habits and spending. There are points here and miles there. Some cards place expiration dates on miles. Some cards only work with specific hotel chains. It’s a hassle.

The Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card can alleviate some of those travel card-induced headaches. But about its annual fee of $95 every year after that?

Not sure if it's worth it? We're here to help.

The annual fee is worth it if you:

  • Travel internationally. The Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card carries no foreign transaction fees. These charges — an average of 3% on every transaction made outside of the states — can add up if you travel abroad often. If you're packing the Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card, you can breathe easy knowing every swipe made outside of America (or via an international website) is free.

  • Travel often. Even once the annual fee kicks in, the Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card is worth using for its high rewards rate of 2 miles per $1 spent. A typical airline credit card only offers 1 mile per $1 spent on that specific airline.

  • Enjoy a hefty welcome bonus. This card comes with a nice welcome bonus: Earn 100,000 bonus miles when you spend $20,000 on purchases in the first 12 months from account opening, or still earn 50,000 miles if you spend $3,000 on purchases in the first 3 months. Capital One Venture miles are worth 1 cent each, which means the bonus is good for $500 worth of travel.

The annual fee is not worth it if you:

  • Travel infrequently. This might seem to go without saying, but if you don't fly often, skip the Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card. It's geared toward people who fly a lot. Don't let that nice, one-time welcome bonus tempt you into a card you won't use enough to counter the annual charge.

  • Enjoy a credit card adventure. Some people live to find loopholes in credit cards that allow them to maximize their rewards. If that describes you, the Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card might be too simplistic. You can't transfer your miles to a travel partner and there's no way to increase your rewards through creative spending. You get an ongoing 2 miles for every $1 spent — that's it. A solid, yet hack-free, card.
