Other business credit cards with no preset spending limit

Our small-business writers and editors monitor close to 70 business credit cards. Few offer no preset spending limit. The following options do — but we rate them as mediocre overall.
Consider these cards if no limit is your top priority and you can't get our top picks.
NerdWallet star rating: 3.3
This card marries no preset limit with a more traditional pay-over-time option. You'll earn AmEx points for all purchases, but the 1x rate for the vast majority of them is about as low as it gets. Prepaid flights and hotels booked via AmEx's travel portal earn slightly more (2x). That's still far below what the best business travel cards offer, though. There's also an annual fee: $95 (see ).

What does "no preset spending limit" mean?

"No preset spending limit" means your credit limit is flexible. How much you can put on your business card adjusts, potentially in real time. Issuers base that amount on things like:
  • Your personal credit score.
  • Your spending history on the card.
  • Your payment history with this issuer.
  • The issuer's own data (about risk in your industry, for instance).
Changes with these factors can affect your spending power. For instance, consistently pay on time or early and an issuer may increase your limit. On the other hand, they may slice it if you miss a payment or your credit score drops.
Of course, your limit can change on a traditional business credit card too. But this likely won't shift as often as on a card with no preset spending limit.

Is no preset limit the same as no limit?

No. Business cards with no preset limit do not let you charge however much you want. You just won't have a predetermined cap on your spending.
Most business credit cards are revolving lines of credit. For instance, let's say you had such a card with a $5,000 limit. If you put $2,000 on it, you could still spend $3,000 more. Repay the $2,000, and you can tap into the full $5,000 again.
But what if you have an expense greater than $5,000? In that case you'd have to split it across multiple cards or find a different way to pay it. A business card with no preset spending limit may provide the latter kind of leeway.

How much can you spend on a business card with no preset limit?

It depends. This may be fine for some business owners. For others, the variance can be difficult and a high-limit business credit card may be a better fit. After all, charges can still be declined on no preset spending limit cards.
For example, imagine you put a recurring software subscription on one of these cards. A change to your limit could cause that transaction to fail. That could cut off your software access and leave you scrambling.
You should be able to see your current limit in the online account for your business card. Or you can call the issuer to find out. You may not have the time to monitor this daily. It's at least worth checking before making a big purchase, though.

Can you carry a balance on no preset limit business cards?

Many no preset limit options are charge cards. That means you typically have to pay your full balance each month. Issuers that let you run run up a bigger bill want to make sure your business can foot those costs.
There are exceptions. For instance, The Business Platinum Card® from American Express and the American Express® Business Gold Card let cardholders opt into a "Pay Over Time" feature.
When activated, AmEx automatically classifies purchases of $100 or more as Pay Over Time. They are then subject to interest charges, if you opt to carry them month-over-month:
  • The Business Platinum Card® from American Express Pay Over Time: The ongoing APR is 17.74%-28.49% Variable APR. Terms apply.
  • American Express® Business Gold Card The ongoing APR is 17.74%-28.49% Variable APR. Terms apply.

Alternatives to business credit cards with no preset limit

Expanded buying power cards

No preset spending limit is a hallmark of many American Express business cards. But if you just want a little wiggle room — and to avoid an annual fee — its expanded power cards could be a fit.
The American Express Blue Business Cash™ Card and The Blue Business® Plus Credit Card from American Express both offer this feature. Expanded buying power lets you go above your credit limit in certain instances. It's not no preset limit, but it's more flexible than a typical card.

Business lines of credit

If traditional business credit card limits aren't high enough for your ongoing spending, you may want to consider a business line of credit. This type of financing can let you tap into working capital as needed — at potentially much higher limits than a credit card will offer. For instance, Chase's business line of credit has a maximum amount of $500,000.
These small-business loans often have stricter eligibility criteria than business credit cards. While most small-business card approvals depend on your personal credit score, business lines of credit will weigh that factor alongside others like your time in business and annual revenue. Some online lenders may be willing to extend credit lines to startups, though.

Frequently Asked Questions

No preset spending limit business cards will only affect your personal credit if you don't pay them. They have no impact on underlying credit score factors like credit utilization.
That's true with most business cards. Capital One is an exception. It reports all business card information to consumer credit bureaus — but not for its cards with no preset spending limit (the Capital One Spark Cash Plus and the Capital One Venture X Business).
You need good to excellent personal credit (a FICO score of 690+) to get most business credit cards. That's true for those with no preset spending limit. In fact, your personal credit history may be more important for these cards given their potential spending power.
Issuers will want to make sure you can repay what you spend. They'll likely consider additional factors to assess this. These could include your business's cash flow and payment history.

Methodology

NerdWallet's writers and editors monitor more than 70 business credit cards to select the best options without outside input from partners or other business interests. We evaluate business cards based on value and simplicity, weighing fees, sign-up bonuses and reward rates, alongside perks like interest-free periods, statement credits and elite status (for travel cards).
We consider more than 20 data points for each card we score, including detailed information about rewards, credits and fees. We gather this information from rates and fees documents, deposit account agreements, financial institution websites and company representatives.
Our editorial team regularly reviews and updates our data to ensure consistency and accuracy. We also update our scoring on an ongoing basis to reflect changing industry norms and business owner needs. For instance, in 2026, we added a small deduction for cards that don’t allow users to issue virtual cards and removed the small increase for cards with no preset spending limit.
Final star ratings range from one to five stars. A five-star score represents the best available product for the largest number of business owners. Learn how NerdWallet rates small-business credit cards.
