In October 2018, American Express rebranded the Premier Rewards Gold Card from American Express as the American Express® Gold Card. This article refers to the original version of the card, which stopped accepting applications in 2017. Because of the rebranding, this article is out of date. See our details page for the American Express® Gold Card for the current offer.
The original American Express® Gold Card, launched in 1966 as one of the first "premium" charge cards, is no longer accepting new applications. Current cardholders can continue to use their cards as usual, but American Express will be directing new applicants toward the Premier Rewards Gold Card from American Express instead.
The American Express® Gold Card, long a status symbol for the well-heeled, has taken a back seat in recent years to the The Platinum Card® from American Express and the Premier Rewards Gold Card from American Express, which offer richer rewards and perks. Meanwhile, other issuers have introduced competing premium credit cards with lavish perks aimed at big spenders.
Compared with the original American Express® Gold Card, the Premier Rewards Gold Card from American Express offers more rewards for an annual fee of $325, or $35 more than the original card.
With the Premier Rewards Gold Card from American Express, cardholders earn 3 Membership Rewards points per dollar spent on flights booked directly with airlines; 2 points per dollar at U.S. restaurants, U.S. gas stations and U.S. supermarkets; and 1 point per dollar on all other purchases. Terms apply. They can also save money with a $100 airline fee credit and a $75 hotel credit on qualifying charges.
The Platinum Card® from American Express offers 5 Membership Rewards points for every $1 spent on airfare purchased directly from airlines or booked through American Express Travel, 5 points per $1 spent on hotels booked through American Express Travel and 1 point per $1 on all other purchases. Terms apply. Perks include airport lounge access, a $200 annual airline fee credit and up to $200 a year in Uber credits, to name just a few. The annual fee: $695.
