Mapfre earned 4.5 stars out of 5 for overall performance. NerdWallet’s ratings are determined by our editorial team. The scoring formula takes into account consumer experience, complaint data from the National Association of Insurance Commissioners and financial strength ratings.

Mapfre, an insurance giant based in Spain, offers auto insurance coverage in 11 U.S. states. It is Massachusetts' largest auto insurer.

The company sells policies through independent agents, offering a wide assortment of options and discounts. Its website is available in both English and Spanish.

Why you can trust NerdWallet: Our writers and editors follow strict editorial guidelines to ensure fairness and accuracy in our coverage so you can choose the insurance policy that works best for you. These carrier ratings are specific to auto insurance — a company's rating for other products may be different on our site. See our criteria for evaluating auto insurance companies.

In our auto insurance reviews, our editorial team considers both the customer and the insurer. These are some of the factors we take into account:

Financial strength. We use A.M. Best ratings to confirm an insurer’s long-term financial stability and ability to pay claims. NerdWallet does not recommend companies with a rating lower than a B.

Complaints. These ratings are based on complaints to state regulators relative to a company’s size, according to three years’ worth of data from the National Association of Insurance Commissioners. The best auto insurance companies have fewer than the expected number of complaints.

Ease of use. This category looks at how easily consumers can interact with an insurer through its mobile app and website. This includes how much coverage information is offered online, whether a user can start and track a claim online and get a quote and mobile app scores based on the Apple and Google Play store ratings.

Discounts. We look at both the kind of discounts a company offers and the total number of discounts available.

Mapfre auto insurance coverage

When you're shopping for car insurance coverage, it's important to understand what car insurance coverage you want and what you’re required to buy. For instance, most states require a minimum amount of car insurance to drive a vehicle. Alternatively, if you want extra protection, you may be interested in full coverage insurance. Read about the most common types of car insurance coverage to see how they work.

Mapfre offers all the standard coverage types, including liability and other state-required coverage, towing and rental car coverage, and comprehensive and collision insurance.

The company also offers several add-on options, including:

  • Disappearing deductible. By staying claim-free, you can earn credits to lower the deductible on your collision coverage. You'll earn a $50 credit for your first claim-free year and up to $300 in credits if you continue to be claim-free for more than five years.

  • Accident forgiveness. With this add-on, your first at-fault accident won’t make your premium go up.

The AutoMaster package, available in some states where Mapfre operates, bundles new car replacement insurance with several add-on coverage types, including laptop and cell phone replacement. Details of the AutoMaster package can differ by state.

Pricing based on tracked driving habits

Mapfre offers MotionSmart, a voluntary program that monitors your driving habits through a phone app. The program is available for Massachusetts customers only. You get a discount when you sign up and get started, and you can earn a discount for safe driving behavior.

Mapfre home insurance coverage

Like other homeowners insurance policies, coverage from Mapfre will pay out if your property is damaged by fire, storms, lightning, falling trees or other objects, theft or vandalism.

You can also buy add-ons to cover more situations:

  • Replacement cost coverage will pay what’s needed to replace your home if your policy’s limit is too low to cover the full cost.

  • Water and sewer backup will pay for repairs due to flooding or other damage if service lines break. This isn’t typically covered by standard policies.

  • Home systems protection will pay for the failure of equipment like your furnace, air conditioner or built-in appliances.

  • Home restoration program will expedite the process of returning your home to its previous condition after a covered incident; this includes clean-up of damage from water, fire, smoke and biohazards.

  • Extra coverage for valuable items like furs, jewelry and silverware is available.

  • Fraud protection pays if you’re a victim of forgery or counterfeit money.

  • Personal injury liability helps cover costs associated with issues like libel, slander, wrongful entry and false arrest.

  • Special personal property coverage broadens your standard homeowners insurance by covering more ways your belongings might be damaged or lost.

The Premier Living package bundles many of these add-ons with several others, including coverage for identity theft, additional living expenses while your home is being repaired and the cost to bring damaged property up to current building codes if local laws have changed.

Home insurance discounts

Mapfre offers a discount if you bundle your home and auto policy. Other discounts may be available, depending on your state.

Methodology

Insurer complaints methodology

NerdWallet examined complaints received by state insurance regulators and reported to the National Association of Insurance Commissioners in 2021-2023. To assess how insurers compare to one another, the NAIC calculates a complaint index each year for each subsidiary, measuring its share of total complaints relative to its size, or share of total premiums in the industry. To evaluate a company’s complaint history, NerdWallet calculated a similar index for each insurer, weighted by market shares of each subsidiary, over the three-year period. NerdWallet conducts its data analysis and reaches conclusions independently and without the endorsement of the NAIC. Ratios are determined separately for auto, home (including renters and condo) and life insurance.

Auto insurance ratings methodology

NerdWallet’s auto insurance ratings reward companies for customer-first features and practices. Ratings are based on weighted averages of scores in several categories, including financial strength, consumer complaints and discounts. Our “ease of use” category looks at factors such as website transparency and how easy it is to file a claim. Using our editorial discretion, we also consider customer satisfaction surveys. These ratings are a guide, but we encourage you to shop around and compare several insurance quotes to find the best rate for you. NerdWallet does not receive compensation for any reviews. Read our editorial guidelines and full ratings methodology for auto insurance.
