Credit Card Offers for Department Store Shoppers

If you spend a lot of time and money at department stores, choosing a credit card offer that provides good rewards at these retailers is smart. And you’re in luck: There are several major credit cards out there that will help you score bonus cash back as you weave through the aisles of your favorite store.

Sound good? Here are the best credit cards to apply for:

Best overall: Discover it® - Cashback Match™

If you’re a big shopper, you should definitely have the Discover it® - Cashback Match™ in your wallet. With it, you’ll earn 5% cash back in rotating quarterly bonus categories, up to $1,500 spent per quarter. You’ll also earn 1% cash back on all other purchases.

Historically, the Discover it® - Cashback Match™ has featured department stores and online shopping as 5% bonus categories for at least one quarter per year. But we actually like it for department store shopping for a different reason: It gives you access to Discover Deals, the issuer’s online shopping portal.

If you use Discover Deals (and its associated app), you could get extra cash back, statement credits or in-store discounts on your spending. And since the network of retailers that participate with Discover Deals is robust, it’s highly likely that you’ll get some type of extra reward on nearly all your shopping.

In terms of other features, the Discover it® - Cashback Match™ charges no foreign transaction fee, carries an annual fee of $0 and provides free access to your FICO score on an ongoing basis. All in all, it’s a great card to keep on hand.

Best if you also spend a lot on groceries: Blue Cash Preferred® Card from American Express

The Discover it® - Cashback Match™ is great for fashionistas and mall rats, but if the bulk of your other spending happens at the grocery store, the Blue Cash Preferred® Card from American Express is probably a better pick. With it, you’ll earn 6% cash back at the supermarket (up to $6,000 spent per year — then 1%), unlimited 3% cash back at the pump and select department stores, and 1% cash back on all other purchases.

This is a high, ongoing rewards rate on many of the categories busy families are already spending a lot of money in. So why not score some primo cash back with every swipe?

What’s more, the Blue Cash Preferred® Card from American Express carries a signup bonus: $150 statement credit after you spend $1,000 in purchases on your new Card within the first 3 months. Terms Apply.

One last thing: Don’t be turned off by the card’s annual fee of $95. With all the swiping you’re doing at grocery and department stores, you’re likely coming out ahead because of the card’s high rewards rate.

Best for 5% cash back: Chase Freedom®

If you like the idea of earning 5% cash back on some of your department store spending throughout the year, you should consider the Chase Freedom®. With it, you’ll score 5% cash back in rotating quarterly bonus categories, up to $1,500 spent per quarter. You’ll also get unlimited 1% cash back on all other purchases.

Historically, the Chase Freedom® has included department stores in the quarter leading up to the holiday shopping season. If your spending aligns with the Chase Freedom®’s 5% categories, you could stand to rack up serious rewards at department stores and beyond.

Unlike many other cash-back cards, the Chase Freedom® comes with a signup bonus: Earn a $150 Bonus after you spend $500 on purchases in your first 3 months from account opening. And since all these great perks come at an annual fee of $0, you can feel good about holding onto it. Now, go hit those sales!
