Pros and cons

Pros
  • High rewards rate

  • No annual fee

Cons
  • Needs excellent credit

Aw nerds! It looks like this page may be out of date. Please visit NerdWallet’s Best Credit Cards page for updated info.

The Blue Sky from American Express® is a step up from your generic 1% travel cards. Although the rewards rate is nominally 1%, you can get much more in certain increments: with every 7,500 points, you can redeem for statement credit. And if you redeem for travel expenses, you effectively get $100 back, which means that rewards rate is essentially 1.33%.

AmEx also gives you the opportunity to get credit for all other expenses, but the deal is much less sweet. With every 6,500 points, you can redeem for $50 in statement credit on non-travel expenses – half what you would for a flight or hotel stay.

That $50 difference is irritating, but the card’s still worth it. With an annual fee of $0, there’s no cost to carrying the card. And when you do travel, the Blue Sky from American Express® will make your jaunts much more comfortable and sometimes more inexpensive, too. For example, there’s free car-rental and damage insurance. This means that if you book your wheels with the Blue Sky from American Express®, you can save as much as $40 a day on your rental.

Then there’s added flexibility and benefits, like no blackout dates and Global Assist. The latter is a 24/7 service that will help you out in case of medical, legal or financial emergencies.

More comfort when you travel

Clearly, the Blue Sky from American Express® already does a fine job of keeping your travel expenses low, but you can squeeze even more cash back out of one or two more cards. If you’re a fan and frequent guest of the Hilton or Wyndham Hotels, check out their no-annual fee cards. The former will earn you 6 points per dollar at their hotels, while the latter will earn you 5 points per dollar at their locations and 2 points elsewhere.

Earn rewards and get out of debt

The Blue Sky from American Express® has an APR period of 0% on purchases and balance transfers for 15 months, and then the ongoing APR of 17.24% - 22.24% Variable.

If you are looking to get rid of some debt, check out the Discover it® Balance Transfer. This card gives you an APR of 0% intro APR on Purchases for 6 months and 0% intro APR on Balance Transfers for 18 months, and then the ongoing APR of 17.24%-28.24% Variable APR.

And you can still save on travel if you so desire. Unlike many other cards that’ll help you climb out of debt, the Discover it® Balance Transfer actually does return cash to you. There are rotating rewards that’ll earn you 5%, and everywhere else you’ll get back 1%.
