Pros and cons

Pros
  • High rewards rate

  • No annual fee

  • Intro APR period on Balance Transfers

Cons
  • Needs excellent credit

This Fidelity family of American Express cards, (Investment Rewards American Express and the Retirement Rewards American Express) are the best 2% rewards cards out there.

Few cards have a 2% base rate of return. At present those cards include:

  • Discover Escape: Fidelity's Amex network has broader acceptance than Discover's network. Also, you must weigh the $60 annual fee for Discover Escape against the 25,000 points signing bonus (Fidelity has no annual fee and no signing bonus). In this situation, if you plan to only hold the Discover card for less than 4 years, the bonus more than outweighs the annual fee.

  • Wyndham Rewards: You end up with hotel points, which are less flexible than cash.

  • Capital One No Hassle Miles Ultra, for Professionals with Excellent Credit: We are not a big fan of Capital One miles, because in practice you have to save up until you have a complete plane ticket on one card before you can redeem. Also, there is not a cash redemption option. To add to the list of negatives, there is an annual fee and no signing promotion.

  • Chase's Subaru Card: This card earns 3%, but rewards are capped at $500 a year. Also, it is not useful if you don't own a Subaru.

  • If you have a Charles Schwab account, you may still be able to get a 2% card from them by calling their 800 number.

  • In general, the Fidelity cards rank well for people with Fidelity savings accounts, and who do not spend enough on gas, groceries, and restaurants to benefit from the bonus rewards from cards like Amex Blue Cash or Costco TrueEarnings.

Keep in mind that Fidelity rewards must be deposited into Fidelity savings accounts - if you do not want to open one, consider trying the next best card on the list.
